The John Heinz National Wildlife Refuge at Tinicum, located in southwest Philadelphia, is the Nation’s First Urban Wildlife Refuge.
Established in 1972 to protect the Tinicum Marsh: the largest remaining freshwater tidal wetland in Pennsylvania.
Spanning about 1,000 acres, it offers vital habitat for over 300 bird species and a variety of other wildlife. The refuge features accessible trails, including a popular 3.5-mile loop, and provides year-round opportunities for birdwatching, hiking, fishing, and environmental education all without charging admission.
